In dem abwechslungsreichen Duell zwischen den Asiaten und der derzeit wohl besten afrikanischen Mannschaft führte Senegal zweimal, bevor die Partie mit der gerechten Punkteteilung endete.
Sadio Mané, der Starstürmer des FC Liverpool, brachte die Westafrikaner schon nach elf Minuten mit einem glücklichen Treffer voran. Japans Torhüter Eiji Kawashima liess einen Schuss direkt an Manés Knie prallen. Für den abschliessenden Ausgleich zum 2:2 sorgte der japanische Mittelfeldspieler Keisuke Honda.
