In Irland hat das Referendum über ein Ende des strengen Abtreibungsverbots begonnen. Zur Wahl aufgerufen sind fast 3,5 Millionen Bürger, die Wahllokale sind bis 22.00 Uhr Ortszeit geöffnet. In den Umfragen lagen die Befürworter einer Lockerung zuletzt vorne, viele Stimmberechtigte waren aber noch unentschlossen.
Das Referendum hat zu einer riesigen weltweiten Reisewelle geführt. Zehntausende Iren reisen nach Hause, um ihre Stimme abzugeben.

Die Auszählung der Stimmen beginnt erst am Samstagmorgen, mit einem Ergebnis wird nicht vor Samstagnachmittag gerechnet. Die Regierung plant im Falle eines Siegs des Ja-Lagers, Abtreibungen in den ersten zwölf Schwangerschaftswochen straffrei zu stellen. Bei bestimmten Indikationen soll sie bis zum sechsten Monat erlaubt sein. (sda/afp)
