Die Toronto Maple Leafs haben es schon wieder getan. Zum sechsten Mal seit 2013 scheitern sie bereits in der ersten Playoff-Runde. Zum fünften Mal verlieren sie dabei das letzte, entscheidende Spiel einer Serie (drei Mal Spiel 7 gegen Boston und letztes Jahr Spiel 5 in den Pre-Playoffs gegen Columbus).
Doch dieses Jahr ist die Leafs-Pleite noch bitterer. Die Mannschaft war gut aufgestellt, General Manager Kyle Dubas hat sie vor und auch im Lauf der Saison geschickt verstärkt. Toronto ging als haushoher Favorit in die Serie gegen die Montréal Canadiens, gegen die man sieben von zehn Regular-Season-Duellen gewonnen hat. Doch nachdem die Leafs in der Serie mit 3:1 in Führung gegangen waren, begannen die Nerven mal wieder zu flattern. Spiel 5 und Spiel 6 verloren sie nach einer Aufholjagd noch in der Verlängerung. Im siebten Spiel in der Nacht auf heute waren sie komplett von der Rolle und verloren mit 1:3.
Während in Toronto Fassungslosigkeit herrscht, ist der Jubel in Montreal riesig. Und der Rest der Liga reagiert einmal mehr mit Hohn und Spott.
